BROWN BEAR TRUST GRANT

Bear Education in Kodiak Schools

Now in its fifth year, the Kodiak Brown Bear Trust Grant brings a month-long bear course into 9th and 10th grade biology and earth science classes at Kodiak High School, taught with local experts from Alaska Fish and Game, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Koniag, the Alutiiq Museum, and more. It culminates in a field experience where 16 selected students observe Kodiak bears in the wild: informed, respectful coexistence, and the next generation of conservation-minded leaders.

ABOUT

Jennifer Smith

Growing up near the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park allowed me to develop and pursue my ever-growing fascination with the natural world.

In 1989 she moved to Alaska to teach, and Alaska only fueled the passion: brown bears above all, photographed from Kodiak Island to Africa, India, Canada, Costa Rica, and Patagonia.
